Lavender: A Return to Calm

When we think of candles today, words like aromatherapy, healing, ceremony, and soy come to mind. Follow that with feelings like calm, peace, aromatic warmth, and softness. We often speak about how candles make us feel — the energy they create, and what they invoke through the experience.

But did you know that adding essential oils to candle wax has ancient roots in China and India? Essential oils were first used to create candles, incense, and other applications, though it wasn’t until the 20th century that scented candles became popular in homes (that's another story.)

Candles are more than just light; they are rituals, stories — a weaving of energy that speaks to the soul and evokes the senses. If the candle is the foundation, its essence is the scent.

Let’s look a little deeper, shall we?

Lavender (or Lavandula) – a member of the Mint family, traces back 2,500 years, with origins rooted in the Mediterranean, India, and the Middle East. Its name comes from the Latin root lavare (lah-vah-re), which means "to wash," connecting it to cleansing rituals and the removal of negative energy.

Ruled by the planet Mercury and associated with the astrological signs Virgo and Gemini, lavender is linked to the element of Air. A breath of fresh lavender is energetically tied to clarity, peace, and spiritual attunement. Its soft purple hue is also connected to Sahasrara, the Crown chakra – a gateway to intuition, spiritual insight and connection to higher purpose.

Burning a candle with pure lavender essential oil emits more than just a scent, but has healing and therapeutic benefits.

Lavender has been revered throughout time. The Egyptians used it in the embalming process to cleanse the body and spirit. The Greeks turned to it medicinally for headaches, gastritis, and sore throats. The Romans, too, valued lavender for its therapeutic uses — adding it to baths, bedding, clothing, and hair — practices we still see today.

Widely celebrated for its calming scent, lavender is classified as a nervine — a nervous system relaxant — that can help induce sleep, improve memory, relieve pain, and reduce anxiety. It also boasts antiseptic and antimicrobial properties, aiding in the treatment of minor wounds and burns, soothing inflammation, and easing aching muscles.

Lavender is the weaver of new beginnings, a gentle guide back into alignment with oneself.
